Arson and wildfire investigations in Iberia

Overview

Authorities in Portugal and Spain are conducting various investigations into wildfires and incidents of arson.

In Portugal, significant blazes have occurred in locations such as Peso da Régua, Santa Marta de Penaguião, Mouriscas, and Miranda do Douro. In Peso da Régua, a 53-year-old man was detained on suspicion of starting at least five forest fires using direct flames on dry vegetation. A fire in Miranda do Douro near the Fresno River resulted in damage to seven vehicles.

In Spain, judicial investigations are targeting several incidents. In Aragon, the investigation into the Las Peñas de Riglos wildfire, which destroyed between 14,000 and 18,000 hectares, has focused on a 28-year-old Colombian national seen on video near the ignition point. The Guardia Civil’s environmental unit (UCOMA) stated the fire is “fully compatible” with the direct application of a flame to natural fuel, and investigators are not ruling out accelerants. The prosecution has ruled out negligence, natural causes, or electrical failures.

In Madrid, the Provincial Court ratified the provisional imprisonment of a 52-year-old man suspected of causing the Lozoyuela forest fire, citing risks of flight and recidivism. In Toledo, the Guardia Civil arrested three individuals following a violent chain of events in Santa Cruz de Retamar; an armed robbery of 15,000 euros allegedly led to a retaliatory arson attack on five properties and a subsequent shootout.

Other recent incidents include the arrest of a 35-year-old man in Granada after being filmed setting fires, and an investigation in Beas, Huelva, regarding a 1.2-hectare fire caused by gross negligence during metal grinding work.
