The series of industrial Industrial fires that began in early June 2024 continues have persisted into late July 2026, prompting coordinated safety actions across Italy. In early July 2026, blazes struck the REMAT Lazio waste‑management plant in San Giorgio a Liri, the Polirecuperi recycling facility in Cornaredo near Milan, and a fire in Maracalagonis; authorities contained the incidents, advised residents to keep windows closed, and monitored air quality with no hazardous spikes recorded. On 28 July 2026 a fire erupted at the A2A waste‑treatment plant in Novate Milanese. The blaze, fed mainly by stacks of paper, engulfed more than half of the recycling island. Twelve fire units with roughly 35‑40 firefighters worked to contain the flames; one plant worker suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation. The municipal mayor issued a 24‑hour emergency ordinance closing parks, gardens and playgrounds and directing residents to keep doors playgrounds, banning outdoor activity in the western rail‑line zone, and ordering doors, windows shut while outdoor air‑treatment and ventilation units were suspended. Fire‑fighting crews worked throughout the day; to remain shut. ARPA Lombardia reported normal carbon‑monoxide levels but warned that smoke could disperse unpredictably, urging residents west of the railway line to remain indoors. The fire is now largely under control, with remaining hotspots being extinguished and cleanup operations slated to begin, while the cause remains under investigation.
