Artemis II lunar mission
Overview
The Artemis II mission, which launched from Kennedy Space Center in April 2026, involved a crew of four—Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen—traveling over one million kilometers during a nine-day journey around the Moon. During the mission, the crew broke a 56-year-old record for the furthest distance humans have traveled from Earth, with Christina Koch becoming the first woman to travel to the Moon.
While orbiting the Moon at approximately 74,000 kilometers, the astronauts observed five distinct flashes of light on the lunar surface. NASA confirmed these were lunar impact flashes caused by small rocky fragments striking the surface at high velocities. These observations, which were part of a scientific experiment, provided insights into lunar impacts and were substantiated after scientists ruled out cosmic rays or reflections from the Orion spacecraft.
