Artisanal gold mining suspension in Siguiri, Guinea

Overview

In late October 2026, Acting Governor Colonel Fadjimba Mara suspended all artisanal gold mining activities in the Siguiri region of Guinea. Authorities cited environmental damage, risks to public security, and the pollution of waterways as primary reasons for the ban, specifically noting the use of heavy machinery. Following the announcement, the Guinean Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralization suspended 22 regional officials, including the acting governor, in connection with the regulatory situation.

By early November 2026, the ban led to a massive displacement of foreign workers. While initial reports noted the departure of over 8,000 Burkinabè nationals, Malian authorities later described the situation as a “humanitarian catastrophe,” reporting that nearly 80,000 people of six different nationalities, including nationals from Burkina Faso, Mali, and Togo, had crossed into Mali since early November.

The operation caused diplomatic tension between Guinea and Burkina Faso. Burkina Faso’s Minister of Security, Mahamadou Sana, alleged that his country was not informed in advance and reported that some Burkinabè nationals reportedly sustained gunshot wounds and faced inhumane treatment. In response, the Burkinabè government mobilized approximately 200 vehicles to repatriate citizens and established reception sites in Bobo-Dioulasso and Ouagadougou to provide medical and humanitarian aid.

Guinean Foreign Minister Morissanda Kouyaté defended the crackdown to diplomats, asserting that while Guinea remains committed to Pan-African solidarity, the state must protect its national sovereignty and environmental resources from illegal exploitation.
