As Pontes thermal plant decommissioning
Overview
The decommissioning of the As Pontes coal-fired power station in Galicia has progressed through significant physical and political stages. On 30 July, Endesa executed a controlled demolition of the facility’s four 99-metre concrete cooling towers. The operation was coordinated with local authorities and emergency services to ensure safety and aimed for a “zero-waste” outcome by recycling over 90% of the concrete and steel material.
Following the demolition, the CIG-Ferrol union has called for a new reindustrialization plan for the region. The union has criticized the lack of available industrial land for new projects, arguing it is “inacceptable” that large areas of infrastructure remain unused while the municipality lacks space for development. CIG maintains that Endesa holds an “evident responsibility” to support the territory’s economic recovery and has demanded transparency regarding future projects and employment guarantees.
