ASEAN academic and cultural exchange initiatives

Indonesian and Malaysian educational institutions are expanding academic and cultural collaborations within the ASEAN region. Initial efforts focused on deepening research networks and language diplomacy, such as the development of Bahasa Indonesia for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) through partnerships between Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jawa Timur, Universiti Malaya, and the Sarasas Suvarnabhumi Institute of Technology. Other initiatives included international seminars on Islamic education governance to meet global standards.

Subsequent programs have emphasized direct student exchanges and vocational training. The ‘Narasi Nusantara’ initiative between Universiti Putra Malaysia and Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia focused on Malay language, literature, and cultural heritage. Additionally, the ‘Batik Beyond Borders’ program between Kolej Komuniti Sabak Bernam and Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan Negeri 9 Bandung promoted technical and vocational education and training (TVET) by exploring the shared textile heritage of Malaysian and Indonesian batik.
