ASEAN economic cooperation work plans
Overview
During economic ministerial meetings in Manila, ASEAN has established new cooperation frameworks with both the United States and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).
On September 21, 2026, ASEAN and the United States endorsed a 2026–2027 work plan under the Trade and Investment Framework Arrangement (TIFA). This plan aims to deepen economic ties by focusing on the digital economy, agriculture, trade facilitation, and support for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). It also addresses intellectual property, regulatory practices, labor, and supply chain resilience.
Following this, on September 23, 2026, ASEAN and EFTA adopted a longer-term economic cooperation work plan spanning 2026–2030. This framework emphasizes the implementation of free trade agreements, e-commerce, innovation, emerging technologies, and sustainable development. EFTA, which has existing agreements with six ASEAN member states, intends to facilitate further enterprise dialogue through business delegations.
