Philippine environmental officials have called for the country to use its chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to lead regional efforts regarding climate security. During a forum focused on the ‘climate-conflict nexus,’ experts and officials emphasized integrating climate resilience into the bloc’s regional security architecture to address environmental challenges through collective finance and technology.

Following these calls, Singapore and Vietnam expressed support for sustaining the Philippines’ climate agenda. Singapore indicated plans to build upon these initiatives during its own upcoming chairmanship through a three-year initiative titled ‘Climate Adaptation and Resilience for ASEAN’s Transformation’ (CARAT). Vietnam also urged ASEAN members to strengthen coordination on biodiversity protection, disaster risk reduction, and collective resilience.
