Asian Film Festival Barcelona 14th edition

Overview

The 14th edition of the Asian Film Festival Barcelona (AFFBCN), organized by Casa Asia, is scheduled to run from October 22 to November 1. The festival features over 100 to 120 films from 25 Asia-Pacific countries, with a focus on independent, experimental, and auteur cinema produced primarily between 2025 and 2026.

A major theme of this edition is Indian cinema, coinciding with the 2026 Spain-India Dual Year. Programming includes a ‘Focus India’ section and a retrospective of films about India made by Western filmmakers. The festival’s opening session at CaixaForum Barcelona features the film ‘If on a Winter's Night’ by Indian director Sanju Surendran.

Festival director Menene Gras Balaguer noted that the selection aims to move away from dominant commercial narratives to highlight young creators and address social issues such as migration, housing, gender perspectives, LGTBIQ+ rights, and gender-based violence.
