Assam Rifles engagement with Naga communities
Overview
The Assam Rifles has engaged in contrasting activities involving Naga youth and border movement. On September 18, the force launched a 10-day ‘Seema Darshan Tour’ under the Operation Sadbhavna project. This initiative brought students from Nagaland to various Indian locations, including Guwahati and Tawang, to foster national unity and expose them to the strategic importance of frontier areas.
However, on September 19, Assam Rifles personnel at the Avangkhu checkgate in the Meluri district prevented a Naga Students’ Federation delegation from traveling to Naga-inhabited areas in Myanmar for a cultural exchange program. Despite the group holding reference letters, the stoppage drew condemnation from several Naga organizations. The Angami Students’ Union called the action “insensible,” while the NNC/FGN alleged that such restrictions show “no regard for basic humanitarian values and rights” and undermine long-standing kinship and trade ties across the India-Myanmar border.
