Assault on Indian students in Nitra

Overview

On the night of July 31 to August 1, 2026, a group of four masked men assaulted four Indian students sitting near the Nitra River in Nitra, Slovakia. The attackers reportedly targeted the group after learning their nationality. One victim, an English teacher and PhD student, sustained severe facial injuries, including a broken cheekbone and jaw fractures, requiring emergency surgery in Bratislava. The other three students also suffered injuries and were hospitalized.

Local police recorded the incident as a misdemeanor against public order, though they indicated it could be escalated to criminal charges pending further evidence. In response to the violence, Bishop Viliam Judák of Nitra issued a statement condemning the attack and all forms of hatred, emphasizing the dignity of all people regardless of origin or religion.
