Overview

AstraZeneca has reported positive results from two Phase 3 clinical trials, OBERON and TITANIA, regarding its experimental monoclonal antibody, tozorakimab, for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The drug targets interleukin-33 (IL-33) to block inflammatory processes.

Trial data indicates that tozorakimab reduces moderate to severe exacerbations by approximately 29% to 34% among former smokers and roughly 29% to 30% in the broader population of current and former smokers. The treatment appears effective regardless of blood eosinophil levels, with exacerbation reductions exceeding 40% for patients with eosinophil counts of 300 or higher and between 20% and 30% for those with lower counts.

The drug was reported to be generally well-tolerated, with injection-site reactions being the primary adverse effect. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has accepted tozorakimab for priority review as an add-on maintenance therapy for adults with COPD. AstraZeneca is also exploring the drug’s potential use for asthma and bronchiectasis.
