Asturias-Aucalsa highway toll and safety dispute
The regional government of Asturias has initiated disciplinary proceedings against Aucalsa, the concessionaire of the AP-66 highway. The dispute centers on the company collecting full tolls despite ongoing road works that cause significant traffic delays and impact service availability. Asturias intends to impose highway, seeking fines totaling approximately €1.1 million, consisting million. Asturias President Adrián Barbón argued the incident demonstrates the road is not in adequate condition to justify current tolls, which cost passenger vehicles €16.20 for the full route from Campomanes to León. He also noted that maintenance and construction works are reportedly over a year behind schedule. The Ministry of Transport defended its response, stating the road was reopened in “record time” and that structural experts will evaluate the site, suggesting the collapse was a “normal occurrence during construction.”
