The conflict intensified following a concrete slab collapse in the Negrón tunnel, which forced a total highway closure and diverted traffic through the Pajares pass. Asturias President Adrián Barbón argued the incident demonstrates the road is not in adequate condition to justify current tolls, which cost passenger vehicles €16.20 for the full route from Campomanes to León. He also noted that maintenance and construction works are reportedly over a year behind schedule. The Ministry of Transport defended its response, stating the road was reopened in “record time” and that structural experts will evaluate the site, suggesting the collapse was a “normal occurrence during construction.”
