Asunción municipal corruption investigation
Overview
Asunción Mayor Luis Bello submitted a final report to the Public Ministry following an intervention of the city’s Road Department to investigate corruption and resource mismanagement.
The investigation uncovered several irregularities, including the disappearance of at least 74 tons of asphalt and the use of municipal resources to pave private property owned by the firm Condor. Auditors also identified 54 inactive security cameras, a lack of GPS tracking on trucks, and fuel usage discrepancies exceeding 1,000 liters.
In response, the municipality has implemented corrective measures such as installing locks on fuel tanks and updating procedural manuals. Four municipal officials and one citizen have been charged with appropriation by the Economic Crimes Unit.
