Athens Medical Association healthcare oversight
Overview
The Athens Medical Association (ISA) has intensified its oversight of private primary healthcare providers, including clinics, polyclinics, and diagnostic laboratories. Since the start of 2024, the association has conducted thousands of inspections through committees and random sampling to ensure compliance with hygiene, legal, and scientific standards.
As a result of these enforcement actions, the ISA has imposed over 1.32 million euros in administrative fines on 40 healthcare providers. Furthermore, 18 entities had their operating certificates suspended for periods ranging from one to six months, while 12 entities faced permanent closure.
To assist the public, the association has released specific guidelines regarding the submission of medical complaints. These guidelines clarify which authorities to contact based on the nature of the grievance, such as local medical associations for unethical behavior, the National Transparency Authority for legal violations, or the Hellenic Police for criminal offenses. Complaints regarding doctors or companies within the ISA’s jurisdiction may be submitted in writing, either by name or anonymously.
