Athletic events and sports tourism in Spain and Argentina

Overview

Regional athletic events and sports tourism continue to see high participation across Spain and Argentina. In Spain, several running events have reported record-breaking attendance, such as the Cursa de la Mercè in Barcelona and the Cursa de la Dona in Roses. The 40th edition of the Córdoba-Almodóvar del Río Half Marathon drew over 600 runners, with Redouan Nouini and Alba María Reguillo securing first place in the men’s and women’s categories. Recent developments in Spain show increasing demand for regional races. The Trail Pueblos Blancos in the Sierra de Cádiz has reached full capacity with 1,000 participants and a 500-person waiting list, offering distances from a 17km hike to a 70km ultra trail. Additionally, the Coruña 10 has sold out its 3,000 spots, and the first Trail Pico del Fraile in Tejadillos is launching with a focus on inclusivity for runners with different abilities. The Carrera de la Mujer in Córdoba is also noted among upcoming activities. In Argentina, athletic activity remains widespread. Athletes from Balcarce recently competed in the Buenos Aires International Marathon, with Carlos Rubén Maldonado and Sebastián Fernando Cagni completing the course, and participated in the Provincial Gravel and Rural Bike Championship in Carmen de Areco despite heavy rain and wind. In Otamendi, Lorena Isasa and Gastón Peidón competed in a 10K field race. Other significant Argentine events include the second Colegio de Abogados Marathon in Córdoba, which attracted over 2,600 participants under the slogan ‘Malvinas corre con nosotros’ to honor veterans, and the fifth Natural Race in Mendoza, which saw 2,700 athletes compete in trail running distances from 7K to 60K. Additionally, the ‘Gallegos Corre’ event saw over 160 participants. Looking ahead, the ninth edition of San Francisco Corre 21K is preparing to host approximately 1,300 participants across 5K, 10K, and 21K distances.
