Athletic long-distance swims for social causes in Italy

Overview

Athletes in Italy are performing long-distance swims to advocate for various social, environmental, and cultural causes.

In Tonnarella, triathlete Simone La Barbera is undertaking a 50-kilometer challenge to promote environmental respect and sportsmanship. In the Nettuno area, former water polo player Umberto Gatti swam six nautical miles to the Torre Astura fortress as a symbolic protest against the deterioration of the maritime monument.

Furthering these efforts, the ‘Nuotata Solidale Passetto–Porto Recanati’ is scheduled for August 29 along the Conero coast. Led by Paralympic swimmer Andrea Lanari, this 25-kilometer solidarity swim aims to promote workplace safety culture and disability inclusion, with proceeds supporting local organizations such as the Centro Papa Giovanni XXIII.
