Attacks on Nigerien security forces
Overview
Niger has experienced a series of violent attacks targeting security forces in different regions of the country.
In late July, heavily armed gunmen attacked a National Guard post and ambushed reinforcements near N’Guigmi in the Diffa Region. The assault resulted in the deaths of 14 security personnel, including ten soldiers and four National Guard members, and the destruction of a military vehicle.
On August 15, the Patriotic Movement for Liberty and Justice (MPLJ), a Tuareg rebel group, claimed responsibility for attacks in the Seguidine oasis near the Libyan border. The group reported targeting a National Guard camp and a mixed security post comprising police, gendarmerie, and customs officials. The MPLJ claimed at least 15 security force deaths and seven injuries, stating they seized a large quantity of weapons, ammunition, and vehicles.
Witnesses in the Bilma region reported seeing parts of a military camp and vehicles being set on fire, noting that attackers fled toward the Djado Mountains in the Kawar region. The MPLJ, led by Moussa Kounaï, advocates for the release of former President Mohamed Bazoum, who was ousted in a July 2023 military coup. Nigerien authorities had not released an official statement regarding the casualties or damage as of Sunday afternoon.
