Michael Jordan’s custom 1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello has resurfaced after being out of the public eye for approximately 24 to 25 years. The vehicle, featuring a Rosso Barchetta exterior and tan leather interior, was uniquely modified by Ferrari to accommodate Jordan’s height through modified seat rails and thinner padding. The car is noted for its historical significance, including its connection to Jordan’s fifth NBA championship and its influence on the design of Air Jordan XIV sneakers, which utilized quilted leather and side vents inspired by the vehicle. Following its long tenure in a private California collection, the car was located by a Miami-based dealer in early 2026. It was scheduled for an online auction hosted by Joopiter from September 15 to September 30, with a pre-sale estimate between $700,000 and $1.3 million. The vehicle also retains its iconic ‘MJ5’ vanity plate and features chrome Speedline wheels. The auction, conducted via Joopiter in partnership with collector-car specialist Curated, concluded with the vehicle selling for US$2.7 million. This final price more than doubled the initial upper estimate and set a new public auction record for the model. The sale attracted 43 bids, reflecting a growing collector interest in icons from the 1990s and early 2000s. Experts noted that the record-breaking price reflects a shifting market where a new generation of collectors is increasingly pursuing icons from that era. During his five years of ownership, Jordan drove the car approximately 10,300 kilometers, often using it to travel to Chicago Bulls games and practices. The vehicle currently has 29,774 kilometers on the odometer and retains its 5.5-liter V12 engine. In connection to the vehicle’s design legacy, Nike announced it would reissue the Air Jordan 14 Retro in the Forest Green colorway on October 31. ~~This reissue of the 2005 iteration features a white leather base with dark green accents on the midsole, Jumpman badge, and suede heel.~~
