Audi investment in Georgia manufacturing plant

Overview

Audi has announced plans to establish its first manufacturing facility in the United States, located at the Middle Georgia Megasite in Peach County, near Macon. The project involves an investment estimated between $4 billion and $4.2 billion (approximately 3.6 billion euros).

The plant is intended to produce premium electric SUVs, specifically targeting models such as the Q7, Q8, and Q9, with a projected annual capacity of 200,000 vehicles. The initiative is expected to create approximately 4,500 jobs. Site grading is anticipated to begin in 2027, with construction following in 2028 and production expected to commence in the early 2030s.

The decision to localize production for the North American market follows reported costs of 1.2 billion euros in 2025 due to trade pressures and tariffs. During the announcement, which was unveiled by CEO Gernot Döllner alongside President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Perry, the President credited the administration’s tariff strategy for the investment.

While Döllner expressed support for the move to mitigate high import costs for materials and finished vehicles, the announcement has drawn significant criticism from German politicians. SPD transport expert Isabel Cademartori described the collaboration as a “shame,” accusing the executive of providing “campaign support” to an autocrat while the administration engages in trade wars against Germany. Additionally, representatives from Volkswagen’s works council have raised concerns regarding political neutrality and the potential impact on German industrial sites. The final investment remains subject to approval by the Volkswagen Group's supervisory board.
