Overview
In August 2026, the Sturgeon Moon was observed alongside a partial lunar eclipse. In Texas, the eclipse was expected to create a reddish or orange hue as sunlight is filtered through Earth’s atmosphere, an effect described by NASA as if “all the sunrises and sunsets of the world were being projected onto the Moon.”
The Sturgeon Moon, which reached peak fullness on August 27, is the final full moon of meteorological summer. The name is derived from traditions regarding the ease of catching giant lake sturgeon during this season.
