By late August 2026, Australia’s renewable energy sector reached several new milestones. Rooftop solar installations exceeded 1 GW for the first time in a single quarter (April to June 2026), surpassing the previous record of 942 MW set in late 2023. Small-scale battery storage also experienced record growth. During the same quarter, over 111,000 batteries were approved, contributing 3.6 GWh of installed capacity. The Clean Energy Regulator (CER) linked this momentum to the Cheaper Home Batteries scheme, noting that the program has received more than 500,000 applications since its inception. As a result, renewable generation accounted for approximately 42% of the National Electricity Market (NEM) generation, an increase from 37% during the same period the previous year. Furthering this expansion, the $1.7 billion Gawara Baya wind farm in North Queensland was greenlit by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. Recent developments highlight the impact of these shifts, with South Australia reporting that rooftop solar met 99.9% of total electricity demand during peak hours. However, the rapid surge in solar adoption has also prompted concerns regarding the management of aging panels and the necessity for national recycling programs. In September 2026, progress continued with major project milestones in Western Australia and Victoria. Frontier Energy commenced construction on the Waroona renewable energy project, which includes a 132MW solar facility and an 81.5MW/6.9-hour battery storage system. Meanwhile, Recurrent Energy’s 150MW Carwarp Energy Park near Mildura reached substantial completion ahead of schedule. This Victorian site is designed to eventually transition into a solar and battery hybrid project, utilizing existing approvals for a 120MW battery.
