Australian disability rights reform advocacy

Overview

Three years after the Disability Royal Commission issued 222 recommendations to address the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of people with disabilities, advocacy groups are reporting a lack of systemic progress.

A national coalition of over 20 disability advocacy organisations released a ‘Report Card’ to assess ten key recommendations, including NDIS safeguards and inclusive education. The findings indicate that none of the ten specific recommendations examined have been fully implemented. The report highlights that four recommendations show no significant action, while the coordination of support under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is reportedly regressing.

Advocacy groups are also pushing for legislative reform. People with Disability Australia (PWDA) has called for urgent changes to the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 to move away from a reactive complaints model. Additionally, advocates are demanding a National Human Rights Act to ensure domestic law adequately reflects the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Concerns have also been raised following Senate Estimates revealing that a federal taskforce established to monitor reform progress has been disbanded.
