Australian gas-to-electric energy transition

Overview

Australia is seeing a transition from gas to electric energy across both residential and industrial sectors.

In the residential sector, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has funded the ‘Go Electric’ pilot project in Canberra. Scheduled to run from October 2026 to September 2028, the initiative aims to assist up to 1,000 households in transitioning to electricity through rebates and support for technologies such as rooftop solar, batteries, and induction cooking.

Simultaneously, industrial and commercial sectors are experiencing a shift toward electric heat pumps. A report by the Australian Alliance for Energy Productivity (A2EP) indicates that major heat pump installations in existing buildings have doubled since 2022. While sectors like food and beverage are adopting the technology, other areas such as hospitals and aged-care facilities have yet to see significant shifts. In Victoria and New South Wales, government incentives have contributed to a trend where approximately 80 per cent of new large buildings are being constructed as fully electric.
