Australian National Electricity Market developments

Overview

The Australian National Electricity Market (NEM) has seen significant infrastructure developments and shifts in demand. In Victoria, a ‘three hours free power’ scheme led to a demand spike of approximately 500MW.

In New South Wales, the Quorn Park Hybrid facility near Parkes has been launched and integrated into the grid. Operated by Potentia Energy, it is the NEM’s first large-scale solar-battery hybrid to feature a single point of connection for both systems. The facility combines a 98 MW solar farm with a 20 MW / 40 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), allowing it to operate as a single unit. This integrated design provides flexibility to either charge the battery or export solar generation directly to the grid. While providing late-night power, the facility is also navigating grid constraints, such as the ‘94T’ constraint, which affects local prices and nearby solar farms.
