Mid‑July 2026 Austrian authorities warned that a spring drought had left soils around Vienna extremely dry, creating an acute risk of forest fires. The national transport safety board later reported 269 fires, most human‑caused, and noted that EU disaster‑relief aircraft were being dispatched to other hotspots, limiting their availability for Austria.
