Austria is expanding its energy storage capabilities to better integrate renewable energy and manage solar power volatility. The initiative began with the launch of the country’s largest second-life battery storage facility in Vienna. Managed by Wien Energie, this facility uses approximately 400 decommissioned electric vehicle batteries to store surplus electricity from a nearby photovoltaic plant. Following this development, the Austrian Ministry of Economic Affairs announced a broader ‘storage offensive’ to address significant price fluctuations in the wholesale electricity market. To mitigate the gap between low midday solar prices and high evening costs, the government aims to reach 8 GW of market-oriented battery capacity by 2030. As part of this policy shift, the government plans to reform photovoltaic subsidies starting in 2027. The new framework will move away from a ‘first-come, first-served’ model, instead 2027, prioritizing financial support for intelligent management and storage solutions to increase self-consumption and reduce grid congestion. In a recent development, Salzburg AG announced plans to install seven battery containers at its Nord combined heat and power plant. This 30 megawatt-hour system is designed to store solar energy during midday peaks for use during the evening and early morning, providing a reliable buffer to mitigate the unpredictability of wind and solar power.
