Austria violence protection policy expansion

Overview

The Austrian government has announced plans to strengthen violence protection through significant budgetary and personnel increases. The Ministry of the Interior intends to raise its budget to 27 million euros by 2027, a move expected to triple the number of prevention officers to over 1,400.

Proposed initiatives include the implementation of electronic monitoring, such as ankle monitors, for high-risk offenders, with an assessment of these measures due this autumn. The government also plans to increase the women’s budget over the next two years to support counseling services for victims of sexualized violence.

To improve institutional response, violence protection will be integrated into basic police training. Officials are also prioritizing increased female representation within the police force and encouraging protection centers to proactively contact victims to reduce barriers to seeking help.
