Austrian labor and social benefit adjustments

Overview

In late 2026, Austria implemented several changes regarding worker compensation and social security. A collective agreement between employers and the GPA and vida unions established wage increases for approximately 250,000 workers in the hospitality and hotel sectors. These increases average 3 percent, with specific rises for lower-income earners and apprentices, alongside one-time bonuses.

Concurrently, the Austrian Public Employment Service (AMS) announced it would pay approximately 135 million euros in back payments to roughly 250,000 individuals. This follows an Administrative Court ruling that found the agency had incorrectly deducted unemployment insurance contributions from low-income earners who were legally exempt. While the average repayment is approximately 400 euros, some individuals may receive up to 2,500 euros.

Additionally, adjustments to the subsistence minimum for individuals facing debt garnishment were scheduled to take effect in January 2027, increasing the general basic amount to 1,351.57 euros per month.
