Low water levels in the Danube, Rhine, Po, and Loire have strained energy production, forcing reduced output or shutdowns of nuclear and coal-fired plants, while Norwegian hydropower reservoirs reached 30-year lows. The United Kingdom is on track for its hottest summer on record, with a mean meteorological summer temperature (June 1 to August 10) of 16.48°C, 1.88°C above the 1991-2020 average. This period includes the country’s fifth heatwave of the year, with temperatures reaching 38°C in some areas. The heat is accompanied by severe drought affecting approximately 45 million people, with 27 million facing water use restrictions. Southern Water has applied for a drought order to ban non-essential water use. Wildfire risks have escalated, with 1,017 blazes recorded in England and Wales so far this year, matching previous record totals. The Royal College of Nursing has warned that extreme temperatures are making hospitals and care homes ‘impossible and inhumane’ to work in, reporting that nursing staff have collapsed due to heat exhaustion. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has chaired an emergency Cobra meeting to address the crisis. As of mid-August, at least 92 million people in countries including France, Italy, and Spain are expected to face temperatures exceeding 35°C.
