AVE CZ landfill fee fraud legal proceedings
Overview
A Czech court has initiated proceedings against waste management company AVE CZ regarding allegations of intentional landfill disposal fee evasion. Prosecutors claim that between 2016 and 2020, the company misclassified hazardous waste as construction material at several sites, including Čáslav, Benátky nad Jizerou, Mšeně, and Hořovice, to avoid fees.
State prosecutor Zdeněk Matula estimates the total damage at approximately 940 million CZK, noting that the State Environmental Fund was deprived of roughly two billion CZK. The prosecution is seeking fines between 1.2 and 1.3 billion CZK and has raised environmental concerns regarding leaking drums and explosions at the Čáslav site. AVE CZ has denied all wrongdoing, with legal representatives arguing the indictment is “purposefully written” and maintaining that the company operated under valid state permits.
