Overview
On September 5, 2026, Victoria Police launched an urgent manhunt for a man in his 50s following a targeted axe attack in Tyers, north of Traralgon. The incident, which occurred around 12:30 p.m., left an elderly man, an elderly woman, and another man with critical injuries. All three victims were airlifted to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne.
Following a four-day search, police arrested 48-year-old Peter O’Ryan on Tuesday night near Tyers-Walhalla Road. Authorities allege that O’Ryan attacked his 47-year-old brother and his elderly parents with an axe following an argument.
The victims' father and brother remained in intensive care with life-threatening injuries, while the mother was reported to be in stable condition. Detective Senior Sergeant Rodney Findlay characterized the event as some of the most serious offending he has encountered regarding family violence.
