Axe Ceremonia festival death legal proceedings

Overview

Following the deaths of photojournalists Miguel Ángel Rojas and Berenice Giles during the Axe Ceremonia festival on April 5, 2025, in Mexico City, legal actions have progressed through criminal and civil channels.

A judge has linked eight individuals and three companies—Operadora Eclectic, La Agencia de los Socios, and O. N. Producciones Creativas—to criminal proceedings for involuntary manslaughter. Investigations indicated that a scissor lift was used improperly for loads it was not designed to carry and that the structure involved was not part of the official Civil Protection program. While most defendants will face trial in freedom, the implicated companies must provide a 500,000 peso guarantee.

Concurrently, the family of Miguel Ángel Rojas Hernández has raised allegations regarding a 100 million peso insurance payout from GMX Seguros to the organizing company, Grupo Eco. Legal advisor Tábata Salas stated the family was unaware of this payout, which documents suggest was intended for victim reparations and legal expenses. This dispute has led to protests from the victims' families and associates, coinciding with the formal charging of a civil protection official in October 2026.
