The privatization of Azores Airlines is progressing following the September 21, 2026, deadline for non-binding proposals. SATA Holding reported that out of eight initial expressions of interest, six candidates were eligible to participate, with five ultimately submitting proposals for the acquisition of at least a 75 percent stake. The identities of the five bidders remain undisclosed. The evaluation process will assess the proposals based on their value, contributions to the airline’s economic-financial capacity, financing conditions, and commitments to regional connectivity and employee protections. Following this, SATA Holding will coordinate an evaluation report for the independent privatization supervisor, economist Augusto Mateus, who will provide a formal opinion to the board of directors. The process has faced political scrutiny, with the Left Bloc (BE/Açores) criticizing the lack of transparency. The party argued that because the airline is 100 percent state-owned, the names of the interested companies and consortia should be made public, noting that other privatization efforts, such as TAP, have disclosed bidder names at this stage. In response to these criticisms, SATA Group president Tiago Santos defended the decision to withhold bidder identities, stating that disclosure at this stage would ‘lead to losses’ that the aviation group cannot risk. Santos noted that the administration has invited the five competitors to submit binding proposals by December 9. He argued that names will only be revealed once proposals are submitted, at which point the consortia will be ‘effectively committed to the acquisition of the company.’ This sale is a central component of a restructuring plan mandated by the European Commission to address the airline’s significant debt and financial instability. The process is expected to conclude through direct negotiations by the end of 2026.
