Azores transportation and connectivity challenges
Overview
The Azores region continues to face significant declines in transportation connectivity. In the maritime sector, inter-island travel saw a 5.4% decrease in August compared to the previous year, with total maritime arrivals for the first eight months of the year down 5% from 2024.
In aviation, the departure of Ryanair has resulted in a loss of over 100,000 airport passengers since April. The Azores Local Accommodation Association (ALA) has warned that the region has now experienced 11 consecutive months of declining tourist overnight stays. ALA President João Pinheiro stated that the current situation should serve as a “warning for all Portuguese regions” regarding the necessity of structural planning for connectivity, noting that reduced air capacity creates a ripple effect across the regional economy. The ALA is calling for a more diversified air connectivity strategy and increased involvement from Turismo de Portugal.
Operational stability is further threatened by labor unrest. Unions SITAVA and SINTAC have announced a strike for SATA Handling scheduled from October 21 to November 3. This industrial action protests the regional government’s plan to sell 100% of the region's ground handling services. The unions argue that the sale is a “political choice made by Portuguese authorities” rather than a mandate from Brussels, claiming the European Commission has confirmed in writing that the plan could be modified through a request from the Member State.
