The German historical crime series ‘Babylon Berlin’ is reaching its conclusion with the release of its fifth and final season. Based on the novels by Volker Kutscher, the series has been a significant production for German television since its debut in 2017, becoming one of the country’s most successful television exports with audiences in over 140 countries. The upcoming season is set in 1933, focusing on the pivotal weeks between January 30 and March 23 following the Nazi seizure of power. The narrative follows investigators Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch) and Charlotte Ritter (Liv Lisa Fries) as they navigate the political upheaval surrounding Adolf Hitler’s appointment as Reich Chancellor, a series of mysterious deaths, and the systematic dismantling of democracy. This final installment is based on the novel ‘Märzgefallene’ and explores the historical context of the Reichstag fire. New details regarding the plot indicate that the protagonists will also deal with murders involving former soldiers and a missing file concerning Hitler’s service as a soldier during World War I. The final season will consist of eight episodes. The episodes will be available on the ARD Mediathek starting September 10, 2026. Linear broadcast dates on the ARD network are scheduled for September 19 and September 25. Following its television premiere, the season is scheduled for home entertainment release on DVD, Blu-ray, and digital platforms on October 9, 2026. To complement the series release, ARD is offering cross-media content, including a documentary titled ‘Babylon Berlin - Die Doku’ to explain the historical context, a podcast, and a video game titled ‘Eine Nacht im Moka Efti’.
