Babylon Berlin television series finale
Overview
The German historical crime series ‘Babylon Berlin’ has concluded with the release of its fifth and final season. Based on the novels by Volker Kutscher, the series has been a significant production for German television since its debut in 2017, becoming one of the country’s most successful television exports. It has been sold to over 140 countries and has received multiple awards, including the Grimme-Preis. The final season, which premiered on ARD in September 2026, is set in 1933. It focuses on the pivotal weeks following Adolf Hitler’s appointment as Reich Chancellor. The narrative follows investigators Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch) and Charlotte Ritter (Liv Lisa Fries) as they navigate the political upheaval, a series of mysterious deaths involving former soldiers, and the systematic dismantling of democracy. A central plot element involves a hunt for Hitler’s medical records from his time in a 1918 military hospital, a document that could potentially undermine his political image. This installment is based on the novel ‘Märzgefallene’ and explores the historical context of the Reichstag fire. Directors Achim von Borries, Tom Tykwer, and Henk Handloegten have noted that the series aims to depict the rapid dismantling of democratic institutions and the defense of civil liberties. While the series has been praised for its portrayal of the speed of political change, some critics, such as author Uwe Wittstock, have pointed out historical inaccuracies, specifically regarding the depiction of Hitler’s medical history and certain atmospheric details of the winter of 1933. In conjunction with the cultural discussion surrounding the show, previously unreleased historical amateur film footage from the estate of a filmmaker known as Kuttruff has been made public. These recordings provide a rare visual record of Berlin between 1930 and 1936, depicting the city as a modern European metropolis prior to its destruction.
