Overview

The Christian Democracy (DC) party in Bahia has been subject to several legal rulings by the Regional Electoral Court of Bahia (TRE-BA) regarding party affiliation and leadership.

Initially, the court canceled the affiliation of Deputy José Carlos Araújo with the DC, ordering his restoration to the Democratic Labour Party (PDT). The court found that Araújo’s affiliation with the DC was performed without his consent during a political dispute involving the party’s national president and former House Speaker Arthur Lira. The ruling noted that “no element was presented that demonstrates any manifestation of will” from the deputy to join the DC.

Subsequently, the TRE-BA dismissed a legal action involving the DC, which resulted in Ariel Capistrano regaining control of the party’s state leadership. This decision followed an internal dispute between Capistrano and José Estêvão concerning party direction and candidate selection for the 2026 elections. As a result of the ruling, Estêvão’s candidacy for Governor of Bahia was removed, leaving Capistrano as the sole DC candidate for the state executive.
