Bajada con Antorchas festival Winter tourism and festivals in Ushuaia
The 31st annual Bajada con Antorchas festival was organized at Cerro Martial in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, to celebrate Mountaineer's Day. The event featured ski and snowboard demonstrations, live music, and local gastronomy. A central part of the festivities involved more than 100 skiers performing a traditional torch descent down the mountain, followed by a ceremony involving the burning of an effigy. Local authorities attended the event, which also coincided with the recent inauguration of a new chairlift at the ski center designed to boost local tourism. To promote the area, tourism officials organized a FAM tour for operators from Brazil, Uruguay, and Paraguay. Expanding on the region's winter tourism history, the Tierra Mayor Winter Center recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. Founded in 1976 by Antarctic explorer Gustavo GirĂ³ Tapper, the center has served as a pioneer for nature and winter sports in the province, hosting activities such as cross-country skiing and snowcat tours. During the anniversary, the Municipality of Ushuaia presented a recognition plaque to the GirĂ³ family for their role in establishing the city as an international destination for adventure and nature-based experiences.
