Baker City fire department funding and emergency response
Overview
The Baker City Fire Department has been awarded a $210,000 federal grant through the FEMA Assistance to Firefighters program. Fire Chief Michael Carlson noted the funds will be used for oxygen tanks and protective clothing, or “turnouts,” which is expected to save the city approximately $200,000 in direct costs. The department intends to stagger these purchases to manage future replacement expenses.
On September 23, the department also responded to a significant structure fire in the 1800 block of 20th Street. The blaze destroyed a house, a detached garage, and a vehicle. Although the resident escaped the building safely, they were transported to a hospital for a medical condition. Twenty-four firefighters from four different departments attended the scene. The Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire, and the American Red Cross is providing assistance to the displaced resident.
