Bali minimum wage increase demands

Overview

Labor representatives, specifically the Aliansi Semeton Pekerja Bali Bersatu, have formally petitioned the Bali Provincial DPRD to increase the provincial minimum wage (UMP) from Rp3,207,459 to Rp4,500,000. They also requested a sectoral minimum wage (UMSP) of Rp5,250,000, arguing that current rates fail to meet the Decent Living Needs Index (KHL) due to rising costs for housing and basic necessities.

In response to these demands and discussions with labor unions, Governor Wayan Koster pledged to review the 2027 UMP to better align with living standards. However, the Governor noted that current regulations project a 2027 UMP of approximately Rp3.45 million, a 7.6 percent increase. Koster cautioned that while worker aspirations are being considered, the government must balance these needs against the risk of company closures if wages rise too sharply. The Bali Regional Research and Innovation Agency (Brida) has been assigned to test various wage schemes to find an economic balance.
