Balkan war hero commemorations
Entities: Enver Šehović · Brezovače · Damir Poljak · 1. Slavne Viteške Brigade Sarajevo · Josip Lucić
Overview
In late July 2026 the Balkans continued a pattern of public remembrance for 1990s war figures. On 30 July a small‑football tournament in Pofalići, Bosnia‑Herzegovina, marked the 31st anniversary of Enver Šehović’s death, while a concurrent tournament in Cvetlin, Croatia, honoured three Croatian defenders. Both events combined sport with ceremonies, speeches and the unveiling of a new monument. The following day, 31 July, a solemn ceremony on Mount Igman near Brezovače commemorated the 34th anniversary of Čedomir Domuz’s death, featuring flower‑laying, veteran speeches and references to his wartime decorations. Together the two gatherings illustrate the region’s ongoing effort to preserve the memory of conflict heroes through community events and official tributes.
