Banditry and violence in Zamfara State

Overview

Armed banditry and terrorist activity in Zamfara State, Nigeria, has resulted in multiple casualties and abductions. In mid-August, security forces from Operation FANSAN YAMMA intercepted an attempt by fighters loyal to Malan Shuaibu to conduct a mass abduction in the Kaura Namoda Local Government Area. This attack was reportedly a reprisal following the arrest of seven individuals suspected of providing logistics and facilitating ransom transfers.

By late August, violence escalated through different methods. An improvised explosive device (IED) planted on the Gurusu–Gwashi road killed two people. Additionally, an attack on the Gusau–Funtua Federal Highway involved gunmen intercepting commercial vehicles, leading to several deaths and the abduction of eight passengers. Security operatives engaged in a gun battle during the highway incident, reporting that 17 bandits were neutralized.
