The aviation sector in Bangladesh is undergoing significant expansion through major aircraft procurement. US-Bangla Airlines previously announced plans to add 21 Boeing 737-8 and 737-800 narrow-body aircraft to its fleet by 2027, aiming to reach 30 international destinations. Simultaneously, the national carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines is diversifying its fleet. Following discussions between US President Donald Trump and Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Bangladesh pledged to increase its commitment to purchase Boeing aircraft. This multibillion-dollar expansion builds upon earlier agreements to modernize the fleet with Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, 787-9 Dreamliners, and 737-8 MAX models. Biman is set to acquire 14 new Boeing aircraft in a deal valued at approximately $3.7 billion, with deliveries expected between 2031 and 2035. Following an agreement signed on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly for 11 additional Boeing aircraft, Biman’s Boeing backlog reached 25 planes. In a strategic shift for the carrier, which currently operates an all-Boeing fleet of 19 aircraft, Biman has now signed a firm order for 10 Airbus aircraft. This order includes four A350-900 widebody jets for long-haul routes to North America, Europe, and the Middle East, and six A321neo narrowbody jets for regional and medium-haul markets. The A350-900 models are expected to offer a 25 percent reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions compared to previous generations. Deliveries for the Airbus models are expected to begin around 2033. This agreement brings Biman’s total acquisition pipeline to 35 new aircraft. Michael Miller, the European Union’s ambassador to Bangladesh, described the deal as a strategic step in expanding commercial and investment ties between Bangladesh and Europe.
