Bangladesh aviation fleet expansion
Overview
The aviation sector in Bangladesh is undergoing significant expansion through major aircraft procurement. US-Bangla Airlines announced plans to add 21 Boeing 737-8 and 737-800 narrow-body aircraft to its fleet by 2027, aiming to reach 30 international destinations and establish the country as a regional aviation hub.
Simultaneously, the national carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines is expanding its fleet. Following discussions between US President Donald Trump and Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Bangladesh pledged to increase its previous commitment to purchase Boeing aircraft. This multibillion-dollar expansion builds upon earlier agreements to modernize the fleet with Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners, 787-9 Dreamliners, and 737-8 MAX models.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines is now set to acquire 14 new Boeing aircraft in a deal valued at approximately $3.7 billion. The proposed fleet includes eight Boeing 787-10s, two 787-9s, and four 737-8s, with deliveries expected between 2031 and 2035. While the interim government has moved toward Boeing, Airbus has reportedly submitted a fresh proposal for 10 aircraft which Biman is currently evaluating.
The massive investment has sparked debate regarding Bangladesh’s economic pressures versus the long-term goal of becoming a global aviation hub. European Union Ambassador Michael Miller has called on the Bangladeshi government to ensure a level playing field in the procurement process, urging that decisions be made based on “commercial merit.”
