Barcelona commuter rail disruptions and recovery

A sinkhole that opened on 22 July 2026 in the Montcada i Reixac tunnel forced the suspension of Rodalies lines R2, R2 Nord and R11. Emergency concrete injections and daily monitoring stabilised the site, and the lines reopened on 26 July with a temporary speed restriction.

By 25 July the three lines were back to normal operation after repairs that used 365 m³ of concrete and 1 930 m³ of mortar. The R3 line, previously halted by a copper‑cable theft, also resumed service but continued to run with average delays of up to 30 minutes, supported by a replacement bus between Fabra i Puig and Puigcerdà and partial use of the R4.

On 1 August a new signaling fault at Figaró forced Renfe to suspend R3 services between La Garriga and Vic. Specialists from Adif worked to locate and repair the problem while an alternative road‑bus service was provided. In parallel, Renfe and the Ministry of Transport launched two mobile applications offering real‑time train locations, interactive maps and AI‑enhanced route planning for Cercanías and Rodalies users.

On 8 August, a technical failure at Toses station caused further disruptions on the R3 line, suspending service between Planoles and La Molina in Girona. Civil Protection activated the Ferrocat plan to coordinate services, though no estimated restoration time was provided.

Monitoring and further safety checks by Adif and Renfe continue, highlighting ongoing infrastructure challenges for the Catalonia Rodalies network.
