Basilicata agricultural labor strikes

Overview

Agricultural workers and transporters in the Vulture Alto Bradano region of Basilicata initiated an indefinite strike organized by the Coordinamento Agricoltori Basilicata. The protesters cited several economic grievances, including high fuel costs, insufficient compensation for weather-related damages, and crop destruction by wildlife. They also criticized the requirement for farmers to personally fund training and protective equipment, calling for legislative action from regional leaders.

By mid-October, the movement gained broader support as the consumer association A. Ba. Co. Basilicata announced it would join a general strike scheduled for October 30. This mobilization, involving the Unione Sindacale di Base and the Comitato Agricolo Sovraregionale, seeks to address a wider crisis in the primary sector characterized by declining purchasing power, rising living costs, and job insecurity.
