Basque Parliament policy and security debates

Political discussions in the Basque Parliament have focused on security planning and regional autonomy. Initially, the PNV and PSE-EE parties called for a dedicated plenary session to review findings from the Basque Security Forum to inform the Comprehensive Security Plan 2026-2030.

During a subsequent General Policy Debate, Lehendakari Imanol Pradales presented several key initiatives, including a 340 million euro investment to improve climate control and cooling in public buildings to combat heatwaves. Other proposed measures include addressing absenteeism, supporting the primary sector against climate change, and implementing a plan to limit screen use among minors.

On the issue of political autonomy, Pradales advocated for the recognition of Basque national singularity and the necessity of mechanisms to decide the region’s political future. He stated that progress in self-governance is tied to the fulfillment of previous commitments by Pedro Sánchez’s central government. While the debate covered education and housing, some observers noted a lack of specific details regarding the implementation of certain long-term political and social goals. This follows previous discussions where PSE-EE leadership emphasized that any evolution of the Basque Statute must remain constitutional and inclusive.
