Bastar Dussehra festival in Chhattisgarh

Overview

The Bastar Dussehra festival in Chhattisgarh featured traditional rituals, including the Nisha Jatra, which involves nightlong worship and special offerings to promote peace and prosperity. Kamal Chandra Bhanj Deo, a member of the former Bastar Royal Family, noted that the ritual has become more inclusive in the current democratic era. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai also participated by performing traditional worship.

This year, the festival saw record-breaking participation following the reported eradication of Naxalite influence on March 31, 2026. For the first time, residents from remote areas in the Sukma, Bijapur, and Narayanpur districts, including the Abujhmad region, were able to travel to the festivities. The gathering was further expanded by the inclusion of deities from approximately 50 villages and from neighboring Odisha, allowing for increased participation in rituals such as Mauli Pargaon and Bhitar Raini.
